Cambodia: Siem Reap and Kompong Khleang

I finally made it over to Siem Reap for the 4th of July weekend.  It has been on my list for a while, but just never seemed to work out.  I started my temple visits with a trip out to Beng Mealea via remok or tuk tuk.  Once there, you realize that you are created by a landmine project sign, a reminder of just how many are still being found in the country.  Being Mealea is one of the temple complexes that hasn't been fully restored and so has a much more rustic and jungle feel to it.

Then I hopped over to Angkor Wat just before it closed for sunset viewing.

And returned the next morning for sunrise with an almost full moon

Then it was on to the faces at Bayon

On the last day I went out to Kompong Khleang, one of the villages on the edge of Tonle Sap lake, the largest freshwater lake in Cambodia and a significant source of fish for the country.  During the rainy season (which it should have been when I visited, but has started late this year) the houses around the lake are only accessible by boat and sit on wooden stilts that are 2 stories tall.

Then out on the actual lake there are floating villages with residents who live on floating houses in the lake during the dry season, but migrate up river during the rainy season as the lake gets too rough.
